Are transgenders children of another god?

The inhumane torturing of a transgender by a gang of thugs in Sialkot is unfortunately not an isolated incident. Cruel cowards have been using their muscles to subdue, subjugate and humiliate the weakest of the weak across the country. We, the citizens, are mere spectators in such cases.

It is a known fact that most of the time such criminal gangs extorting money from the citizens operate in connivance with police officials, often backed by some political personality or group. They are often the foot soldiers of political goons who keep getting elected to our assemblies and are entrusted with the responsibility of protecting the citizens' rights by enacting laws. What a cruel irony!

The evidence of the inhuman torture, in the form a video in which all the accused are clearly visible, is widely being shared across the web. There is another video in which a transgender named Julie narrates more horrific details of the abuse. She says that gangsters kidnapped them, raped them, forced them to drink urine and also hit them with leather belts, apart from slapping, punching and kicking them. The sufferings of this transgender and many more across the country whose ordeals don't come to the limelight should be a source of shame for us as a nation and a story.

If we are judged based on how we, as a society treat, the weakest among us, then we will rank abysmally low by any standard.

Usually, after such videos of abuse emerge and are picked by the international media, groups of distinctive apologists come out in droves to overtly or covertly defend the abuse, or shamelessly try to school us on how the nation's honor needs to be preserved by remaining hush.

Nevertheless, I think remaining silent is not an option. At least not for those who believe in humanity, and equality of human beings, irrespective of their genders, or sexual orientations. It is high time for all of us to introspect by asking ourselves,  what have we been able to do so far despite of knowing that the transgender are routinely abused in our streets and Muhallahs?

It is reassuring to know that the accused have been arrested. Let’s hope that the police and the courts do not succumb to pressure, and are able to punish the abusers, and help the abused transgenders get justice.
